    CEO Task Worksheet

Are you clear on the specifics of your role as the CEO? Most Interior Designers I work with have a vague understanding of what their duties as a CEO are, much less budget time on their calendar to do them! Thus, I developed this list of duties years ago to help Principal Designers fully understand their job.

You understand your role as a designer. Now get clear on what your tasks are as you take control of your business and start running it like a CEO. I find, more than talent, the Principal Designer’s ability to switch gears and function as a CEO, ultimately defines how successful they will be.

This MS Word document details each of your duties as a CEO in bullet-point format. It also has a section for you to write down how much time you plan on spending on each of these duties over the course of a quarter, to help you better understand what time you will need and then put it in your calendar.

Our clients say it can be a bit intimidating to read a 7 page list of all the things they are supposed to be doing, but then find it to be incredibly empowering to have it all right there in front of them. Not only is it validating to see why they feel so overwhelmed, but so helpful in clarifying their list of to-do’s. It is also a great tool for clearly delegating some of these tasks to your Office Manager.

    CEO Accountability Chart

Are you working on roles and responsibilities for your firm? The CEO Accountability Chart lists the areas of the business and design process the Principal Designer is responsible for. Different than a list of duties, the accountability of a role is a succinct listing of what parts of the workflow this role takes full ownership of. This document is well paired with the other role clarification documents in this section and as part of your overall company structure as you define and clarify each role for your firm.

The chart is a MS Word document with editable text boxes. Simply add your logo and take Julia Molloy’s recommendation for the proper utilization of the Principal Designer role or modify it as needed to suit your firm’s particular nuance.
